That frigid autumn night in Burlington, Vt., was not the first time I had stared down the barrel of a gun. Half a world away, in the West Bank, it had happened before. On a hot day in May 2021, a classmate and I, both of us 17 at the time, were protesting near a checkpoint in Ramallah. But I had never expected to feel this on a quiet street in Vermont, on a stroll before Thanksgiving dinner. The shooting of three Palestinian Americans in Burlington has received more sustained coverage than any single act of violence against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank since Oct. 7.

"I think the underlying inflation may not go away the way people expect it to," he told the outlet at the JPMorgan Global Markets Conference. AdvertisementIt's a point Dimon keeps reiterating despite market bullishness, as investors keep trading on the premise that subsiding inflation allows interest rates to eventually ease. In his annual letter to JPMorgan shareholders published last month, he expressed similarly doomy outlooks concerning inflation, interest rates and the economy's trajectory.

Recent stagflationary forecasts are misguided for this year, Bank of America wrote on Thursday. While first-quarter GDP badly missed estimates, the inflation that was seen was driven by strong consumer spending. That separates it from the US's last bout with stagflation, in 2022, when higher prices were caused by a supply shock. download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . Snagging a summer internship at a leading investment bank is not just a fun summer job — it's often the starting point for a career on Wall Street. Wall Street internships are not easy to land, as BI has previously reported. Goldman Sachs, for example, accepted just 1.5% of candidates into its 2022 summer internship class out of more than 236,000 applications worldwide. Interns who perform well tend to be offered a full-time job as an entry-level investment banker upon graduation. We have advice from executives at top firms like Goldman Sachs as well as former interns on how to prepare for and make the most of the Wall Street summer internship.

The first documents the unequal system of justice that grew around Jewish settlements in Gaza and the West Bank. The second shows how extremists targeted not only Palestinians but also Israeli officials trying to make peace. IMPUNITYBy the end of October, it was clear that no one was going to help the villagers of Khirbet Zanuta. But occasional harassment and vandalism, in the days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, escalated into beatings and murder threats. So one day the villagers packed what they could, loaded their families into trucks and disappeared.

As investors navigate the Federal Reserve's higher-for-longer interest rate policy — and eventual rate cuts down the road — they should make sure they have their fixed-income portfolio positioned properly, according to Wells Fargo. The Fed last raised rates in July 2023, bringing the fed funds rate to a range of 5.25% to 5.5%. But investors were buoyed by news Wednesday that the consumer price index showed inflation eased slightly in April. Right now, Wells Fargo anticipates two rate cuts this year and just one in 2025, bringing the Fed's target rate to a range of 4.5% to 4.75% by the end of next year, said Scott Wren, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. Investors can get exposure to intermediate-term bonds through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds.

Walters said Lukenas told him he was putting in more than 100 hours a week at Bank of America. "He made a comment saying like, 'Hey, I'll trade hours of sleep for a 10% (pay) cut,'" Walters told Reuters. Walters said he told Lukenas that was excessive, even by Wall Street's standards. India offers a "very favorable" environment for companies to launch initial public offerings, said Shailendra Singh, managing director at Peak XV Partners, formerly Sequoia Capital India & Southeast Asia. "My general view is, especially in Indian public markets, the regulatory framework, what Securities and Exchange Board of India does, what Reserve Bank of India does, what other regulators do is actually really good," Singh told CNBC. There were 220 IPOs in India last year, up 48% from 2022, making it the second-largest IPO market in the world, according to an EY report. Though Mainland China took the top spot, the number of IPOs there slid 29% to 302. The Indian IPO market is set to remain strong in 2024, buoyed by optimistic investor sentiment, a robust economy, and expectations of lower inflation and rate cuts, EY said.

"Rent, when you have it, auto loans, utilities, these are all things consumers prioritize ahead of credit cards." Gold prices inched up on Thursday following a sharp rise in the last session as the dollar and bond yields weakened on the increasing likelihood of rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve as early as September. Spot gold rose 0.1% at $2,388.10 per ounce, as of 0255 GMT, after gaining more than 1% to its highest since April 19 on Wednesday. "Following the April consumer price index data, the odds for a potential September rate cut have firmed, which suits the gold price from a yield perspective," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. However, a potential bounce in the dollar or treasury yields could be the biggest hurdle for gold price in the remainder of the week." Bullion is known as an inflation hedge, but higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.

Last October, an Israeli settler in the West Bank set a Palestinian home on fire. And last fall, a settler shot a Palestinian in the stomach in front of an Israeli soldier. Yet the authorities have not charged any of these settlers — or others who have attacked West Bank residents — with crimes. In it, they document how violent factions within the settler movement have repeatedly received protection from the Israeli government despite attacks against Palestinians — and even against Israeli officials who tried to challenge the settlers. An Israeli government report in 1982 documented the problem, to no effect.
